June 22, 2021 CBRM Board of Police Commissioners Agenda as presented.

4. CBRPS Divisional Reports:
Police Chief Walsh welcomed the Police Commission and Staff and introduced Staff
Sergeant Jodie Wilson and Staff Sergeant Bill Turner to present the CBRPS Divisional
Reports for the period April 1, 2021 to June 15, 2021.
Staff Sergeant Jodie Wilson reported on the following:
HIGHLIGHTS AND INITIATIVES
• Responded to 342 Covid-19 related calls for service during the provincial circuit-
breaker shutdown and issued 14 tickets for violations of public health orders for
failing to self-isolate (2),failing to social distance(9),not wearing a mask(1),non-
essential travel outside an individual's own municipality (1) and entering Nova
Scotia without authorization (1).
• Issued 458 tickets through targeted traffic enforcement during Project Safe Spring
(357)and Canada Road Safety Week(111), on patrol of ATV trails and surrounding
neighbourhood streets, in addition to roadside checkpoints and vehicle stops across
the CBRM. Traffic Safety and Patrol officers checked a total of 57 off-road vehicles
and 320 motor vehicles, dealt with traffic safety violations under the Off-Highway
Vehicles Act(20) and Motor Vehicle Act, and caught 26 impaired drivers.

CBRPS Divisional Reports (Cont'd):
• Celebrated their role as a proud public safety partner in the CBRM during National
Police Week 2021, highlighting work with the Cape Breton-Victoria Center for
Education, ALLY Centre of Cape Breton, Membertou First Nation, and Nova
Scotia Health Authority, Mental Health& Addictions.
• Recognized contributions of their employees during Corrections Officers Week,
Asian Heritage Month and National Indigenous History Month.
• Hired 10 new Constables to maintain a full complement of front-line officers to
keep communities safe and welcomed 5 cadets from the Atlantic Police Academy
for on-the-job training with a coach officer.
• Signed another 2-year contract with Public Safety Canada, Nova Scotia Justice and
the Membertou Band & Council to continue providing police service to the
Membertou First Nation.

CBRPS Divisional Reports (Cont'd):
Following the report, the Commission discussed the following:
• Increased calls for service from previous year due to Provincial lockdown
Summer on-the-job training for cadets from the Atlantic Police Academy
• Impaired driving charges

• 10 new Police Officers recruited to the Police Service
• K-9 unit consists of 3 K-9 dogs with 1 K-9 officer
Update on outstanding homicide investigations
Number of Police Officer vacancies fluctuates
Sex offender registry
• Human Resources request Police members to self-identify as a minority to track
workplace diversity
• Harm reduction and addiction training
New Health Awareness Coordinator position
• Providing support to members on leave
