Pregnancy, Parental and Adoption Leave
Employees of the municipality shall be provided with a leave of absence without pay in
accordance with Nova Scotia Labour Standards for pregnancy leave, parental leave and
adoption leave.
Pregnancy Leave:
A pregnant employee is entitled to an unpaid leave of absence of up to seventeen
(17) weeks. This leave shall commence no sooner than sixteen (16) weeks
preceding the expected date of delivery as determined by the employee and no
later than the date of delivery.
While the employees is on Pregnancy leave ( not parental or adoption leave )
and receiving EI benefits, the employee shall be entitled to a top up of their
employment insurance benefits so the employee receives seventy-five percent
(75%) of her gross pay (less statutory deductions) to a maximum of 17 weeks.
Parental Leave:
An employee who becomes a parent of one or more children through either the
birth of a child or the placement of a child in the care of the employee for the
purpose of adoption is entitled to an unpaid leave of absence of up to thirty-five
(35) weeks.
For employees who are entitled to pregnancy leave, parental leave begins
immediately on completion of the pregnancy leave and without a break.
Where an employee has commenced parental leave and the child for which the
parental leave relates is hospitalized for a period exceeding or likely to exceed
one (1) week, the employee is entitled to return to work and defer the unused
portion of the parental leave. The employee is only entitled to one interruption
and deferral of the parental leave.

1.0 Specific Objectives
1.1 The objectives of this policy are to:
a. ensure that all municipal employees are aware of their
requirements and responsibilities when requesting a leave of
absence for pregnancy, parental or adoption leave.
b. ensure that all documentation is completed in accordance with
this policy.
2.0 Procedure:
2.1 Employees shall:
a) Complete Application for Unpaid Leave of Absence (Appendix
A) and forward it to their immediate management supervisor for
approval at least four (4) weeks in advance of the leave of absence.
b) Contact the Employee Services Coordinator Human Resources to
complete appropriate documentation and arrange for benefit
deductions if the employee is responsible for the payment of both
the employee and employer share of the group benefit premium.
2.2 Departmental Directors shall:
a) Forward the completed Application for Unpaid Leave of Absence
to the Human Resources Department.
b) If the employee is to be replaced during the leave of absence,
complete Human Resource Requisition and forward it to the
Human Resource Department.
2.3 Employee Services Coordinator shall:

a) Complete appropriate group benefit documentation and make
arrangement with the employee for payment of group benefits
during the leave of absence.
3.0 Collective Agreements
Pregnancy, parental and adoption leaves for employees who are members of a
bargaining unit will be in accordance with the appropriate collective agreement.
