Retirement
Consistent with the practice of the former municipalities now comprising the Regional Municipality,
all employees (the "employees") of the Regional Municipality are subject to mandatory retirement
effective the first day of the month immediately following the month in which they reach the age of
sixty-five (65) years.
1.0 Specific Objectives
1.1 The objectives of this policy are to:
a. ensure that all employees are aware of their requirements and responsibilities
when reaching retirement age.
b. ensure that all documentation is completed in accordance with this policy.
2.0 Procedure:
2.1 The Human Resource Department shall provide Departmental Directors with a listing
of employees who will reach retirement age. Listings shall be provided in January and
July for the following twelve (12) month period.
2.2 At least three (3) months prior to the date of retirement, the employee is required to
contact their manager/departmental director and the Human Resource Department
regarding pension benefits. If the employee does not contact his/her manager, the
departmental director shall initiate the action.
2.3 The Human Resource Department shall review the pension, life insurance and health
care insurance benefits with the employee and process documentation.
2.4 Department Heads or their designates shall submit details of the employee's
outstanding vacation, time in lieu and holiday credits to the Payroll Department for
payment immediately prior to the date of retirement.
